You can now see online availability for JetBlue's Move to Mint upgrade certificates - The Points Guy (2024)

If you're a high-tier JetBlue Mosaic traveler, your ability to use upgrade certificates is now a bit easier. As first noted by user lowkeyflyer on FlyerTalk (who shared a screenshot of an email sent from JetBlue), you can now see online availability when logged in to an eligible TrueBlue account.

As a Mosaic 3 member (courtesy of a 2023 status match following Delta Air Lines' major elite status changes), I was thrilled to see this development, as it allowed me to lock in my plans to use some of these certificates for a trip later this year.

Here's why this will be a major time-saver for members looking to book a comfortable flight in JetBlue's Mint business class.

Online upgrade availability

As a quick refresher, JetBlue first launched Mint upgrade certificates in 2022 as part of its limited-time Mosaic+ status. These were then codified in the carrier's May 2023 overhaul of the TrueBlue program. Once you reach Mosaic 3, you receive four of these certificates, and you get another two when you reach Mosaic 4. These allow you to confirm an upgrade from economy to Mint on eligible flights (excluding basic economy tickets).

As of Jan. 4, you could confirm these upgrades immediately; however, at the same time, JetBlue introduced dynamic pricing — requiring anywhere from one to four certificates on a one-way flight. The only way to check inventory was to call customer service or book a refundable ticket.

Not anymore.

Now, when you're logged in as a Mosaic 3 or 4 member, you should be able to see the number of Move to Mint certificates required to upgrade an eligible flight. Simply search for your desired itinerary, and click on the economy fare bucket. This should load a message with the required number of certificates, like this example with a flight from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) over the holidays.

This particular flight would require three certificates to confirm a set in JetBlue Mint. However, just a week and a half later, the exact same flight can be upgraded with just a single certificate — even though the difference between the two classes is much larger.

This same view appears whether you're looking at paid tickets or award tickets, as flights booked with TrueBlue points are eligible for upgrades.

Note that this appears to only be available to accounts with at least Mosaic 3 status; the exact same flight didn't show availability when I logged in to my wife's account (she has no status).

How to use Move to Mint upgrades

Nothing has changed with the process of using a Move to Mint upgrade certificate. While you can't confirm these during the booking process, you can do so immediately afterward — as long as you have enough certificates in your account.

Go to your reservation in your online account, and click on "Move to Mint." Review the number of certificates your flight requires and then follow the onscreen prompts to confirm the upgrade.

The certificates will be deducted immediately from your account, and you should be able to select seats immediately for yourself (and anyone else on your reservation).

Remember, you must be traveling to use these certificates for companions, and they can't be used on Blue Basic fares, group bookings and JetBlue Vacations packages.

Why this is a great development

JetBlue's upgrade certificates are quite valuable for high-tier Mosaic elite members, as Mint tickets frequently reach more than $1,000 each way. However, prior to this update, there were only two reliable ways to check availability:

  • Book a refundable ticket and attempt to apply an upgrade.
  • Call your Mosaic customer service line.

Now, you can easily see this inventory online, which can be especially helpful for those with flexible travel plans.

For example, I was looking to fly from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) with my wife and daughter, but our ideal travel date required two certificates per person. Since I only had four in my account, this wouldn't work.

However, by shifting our departure to just one day later, we could upgrade the flight for just one certificate per person — even though the paid tickets were priced identically.

Based on the price of Mint compared to the economy ticket I booked, these certificates got us $541 in value per person — or $1,623 in total. Not bad for a simple status match.

Of course, this won't help if your dates aren't flexible or the route you're eyeing usually requires three or four certificates. That said, it's great to see JetBlue add new visibility for its most loyal travelers to use a valuable perk of Mosaic status.

Bottom line

JetBlue has added online availability for Move to Mint upgrade certificates. Now, as a Mosaic 3 or 4 member, you can see exactly how many certificates an eligible flight will require to move from economy to Mint at the time of booking. This can save a lot of manual effort for travelers, who previously needed to call or make dummy bookings to check this inventory.

I was thrilled to use three of my upgrade certificates to book my family into Mint later this year, simply by shifting my departure by one day. It will actually be my first time ever flying this well-regarded product, and I'm especially excited about the new amenity kits and menus announced earlier this year.

Now I need to figure out how to apply my last certificate before it expires Dec. 31.
