wheres the best place to put your live trap
i was just wondering how some of you guys rig your live trap and wheres the the best place to put it , like by a field, pond, etc. do you cover it up with weeds and leaves or just leave it set out in the open

Set is where you see coon tracks. On a bank of a creek, by a culvert, or at a food source the coons are hitting. I really don't think you need to hide it at all unless you are scared somebody is gonna steal it. Coons don't seem to mind the trap at all, there mind is on the bait.

I agree with Briar. Just make sure when you put it out we like to put some sticks around where the trap door is so it want get tripped when a coon sticks his hands in the sides of the cage, or you could just put some closer holed wire around the back, either or and it should work well.

PUTTING A LIVE TRAP....
WHERE THERE IS COONS???!!!
JUST KIDDING! LOL. WE USUALLY SET OURS NEAR CREEKS AND PONDS, ANY WHERE THERE MIGHT BE ALOT OF CRAWDADS FOR THE COONS TO LOOK FOR. THEY COME MOSYING DOWN THE CREEK, AND GET A WIFF OF SARDINES, THEY HAVE TO GO INSPECT IT.

depends on time of year where you put it, in fall and early spring we usually put them on ridge tops along game trails, summer along creeks, if you have any deer feeders out, that is a good place to put them also, we don't cover ours, but my neighbor had one of his stolen last week

Look at it like this, where would you NOT put a trap, then go from there. you might have a culvert beside the road that has tons of coon sign, but its a major highway with lots of traffic, and some animal rights nut might get ahold of it. Be considerate of the people your trapping on and keep in mind the animal welfare. Dont; put it in a place your going to forget about for a coupel of days. You can catch a raccoon any where. ANYWHERE. Also look in to getting a nuisance trapping permit, this can allow you trap all year long and keep multiple coons on your property with out breaking any bag limit or animal welfare laws. Also this will aloow you to trap in town and on private property once you have spoken with the owners. I did that for a summer, after highschool, made a little money and had coons to train my pups.

The easiest way.
Set up a feeding station or feeder barrel. Put your trap there after the coons are using it regular. I have four buckets and two barrels out and keep the barrels full at all times. The only problem I have had is that I have educated my coons. Since I release them back into the area I caught them. The veterans avoid the traps. I have gone as long as two weeks without catching one while the barrel it was sitting next to was being cleaned out. I'm a little slow as it took me two weeks to figure out that if I raised the barrel out of the coons reach the only food available would be in the trap. Trevino you would be welcome to borrow mine, but I am out of the trapping business temporarily. The last coon destroyed my trap by ripping the rod off the pan and generally trashing it.

I have deer stand, my live traps hangs over the edge of the deerstand on a light weight platform. the coon has to come in to get the bait, he cant reach through and trip the trap. if the coon is trapped hes already up the tree, just take the puppy to the tree.

Another good place is find a fast food restaurant near a wood lot or creek. If you look closely you will find a coon run going from the cover to the dumpster. I pulled up to a dumpster once in the middle of the night to show a buddy and eleven coons came running out. Of course it was near an expressway where no one could hunt, the restaurant was a Wendy's, and it had a woodlot with a creek running though it. I also found such a coon run once going to and from a dumpster at the local Jr. High. I never set the trap near the dumpster, but follow the run back into the cover and set it there.
I live 1/4 from a restaurant and can follow the run all the way from the restaurant and all the way across my property.
i set mine on creeks or ponds by highways noone hunts these places and coons are usually thick there just hide it on the creeks or by the ponds and get ready to load them up the next day. cause youll have a coon. we use canned tuna/sardines i have also used caramel popcorn, bread w/ jelly, spam, potted meat, fish remains, chicken remains, live chickens, and dog food and cat food
caught them on all of these
