Dry ranch seasoning mix is a versatile and delicious blend of herbs and spices that can be used to enhance the flavor of a wide variety of dishes. Whether you are making a dip, seasoning chicken, or adding flavor to roasted vegetables, this mix is a must-have in any pantry.

You can take this mix and turn it into Homemade Ranch Dressing to be used on anything you like.

I love the dry ranch seasoning packet mixes at the store. They are so convenient and I wanted to make them myself at home. That’s probably what the major Ranch dressing companies like Kraft do anyway right? They have a container of the dry ingredients on hand and mix it with all the wet ingredients, then package them up.

  • Milk - I used unsweetened almond milk to keep the points low but any type of milk will work. Just adjust the points in the recipe builder.
  • Greek Yogurt - Non-Fat, plain
  • Mayonnaise - Low Fator reduced fat
  • Dry Buttermilk - can be found next to the powdered milk usually in the baking aisle
  • Dried parsley Parsley is a type of herb that is commonly used as a garnish or seasoning in various dishes. It has a bright green color and a mild, slightly bitter taste. Parsley is a good source of vitamins A and C, as well as minerals such as potassium and iron.
  • Dill is known for its distinctive flavor, which is somewhat tangy and reminiscent of licorice
  • Dried chives are a versatile and flavorful herb that can be used in a variety of dishes. Chives are a member of the onion family and have a mild, onion-like flavor. When dried, chives can be stored for a long time and still retain their flavor.Garlic powder is made from dehydrated garlic cloves and like the chili powder above it gets pulverized into a powder or flour consistency.
  • Onion powder is dehydrated, ground onion that is commonly used as a seasoning. Some people do not like the taste of freshly chopped onion so onion powder is a great substitute if you have a picky eater like that in your house.
  • Salt and Black pepper

I don't get what you mean when you say that. The recipe states 1/2 cup mayo. Not 1/4 cup.

  2. Angel says

It didn’t specify the amount of reduced fat just says 1/2 reduced fat. Then in ww recipe she has 1/4 so I did it wrong. Also reduced fat is different from light Mayo which I also messed up so mine will be 2 pts. It’s delicious though. But again low fat and light are different.

Mayonnaise: Hellmann's Real mayonnaise v Hellmann's Lighter than Light mayonnaise. The difference: there's 79% fat in normal mayo (of which 6.6% is saturates) and just 3% in Lighter than Light mayo (of which 0.5% saturates)… a huge differen

  3. Jenna says

Sometimes I will call light mayo reduced fat mayo like it says in the recipe. It's 1/2 cup.

  4. Sarah says

I don't see how much light mayo to use. Thanks!

  5. Jenna says

    2 oz is 1/4 cup
    1/4 cup is 4 tablespoons
Easy to look up as well 😉

FAQs

What is the ranch dressing that restaurants use? ›

Because while some restaurants do use a bottled shelf stable dressing, what you are referring to is a powdered ranch mix (typically the Hidden Valley brand) that the restaurant cooks add milk/ buttermilk and sour cream to make their dressing.

How long will homemade ranch last? ›

How Long Does Homemade Ranch Last? Stored in a well-sealed container in the fridge (assuming you began with fresh sour cream and buttermilk) your buttermilk ranch dressing should keep for up to two weeks.

Why is homemade ranch better? ›

Scratch ranch relies on fresh herbs and aromatics, which bring bite and those pops of grassy flavor that dried or powdered versions never can, so you get an eating experience that is elevated. Usually, ranch recipes will contain fresh buttermilk, and sometimes sour cream as well, for a tang that is really balanced.

What gives ranch dressing its distinctive flavor? ›

“But the particular flavor of traditional ranch can only be achieved with the dry versions of all those aromatics: garlic and onion powder, dried herbs, powdered pepper and buttermilk.” That's because fresh ingredients were rare in Alaska at the time.

How do restaurants make their ranch taste so good? ›

Well having worked there for over 3 years, they use a gallon of Mayo, a half a gallon of 3% buttermilk and 3 packets (large 3.2 ounce packets) of hidden valley ranch mix. You mix the Mayo and a quart of buttermilk then the ranch packets then the last buttermilk. We would let it sit for a few hours to blend together.

Why does Hidden Valley Ranch taste different? ›

The ranch packet has a fresher taste, because you add your own mayo and milk. Even though all the herbs and spices in the mix are dried, they rehydrate quickly and leave you with a product that feels homemade. This version of Hidden Valley Ranch is more flavorful than the bottled version and much, much thicker.

How to tell if ranch is bad? ›

But even if your ranch appears bright and mold-free at first glance, take a sniff — just like with spoiled milk, you'll easily be able to tell if it smells a little rancid. If you're willing to brave a tiny taste, a sour flavor is another surefire indicator that it's best not to consume your leftover dressing.

Can you freeze fresh ranch? ›

No, you don't want to freeze homemade ranch. Freezing it affects the texture and taste. It won't be nearly as creamy and delicious once it's thawed. I, for one, have never had trouble using up ranch dressing.

Is ranch dressing ok if left out overnight? ›

Ranch should be refrigerated after opening because it contains perishable ingredients like buttermilk, which has a high moisture content and is prone to spoilage. Since perishable ingredients can become unsafe to eat after two hours at room temperature, refrigerating this dressing is essential to keep it fresh.

What to add to ranch to make it better? ›

This might seem obvious, but you can add a lot of flavor to ranch dressing by adding more of what's already in it. I love adding lots of fresh herbs, extra garlic, or even lemon zest.

Why is Jet's ranch so good? ›

The flavor is obviously incredible, and what makes it superior to other ranch dressings is that it tastes fresh. So many of these chains have pre-packaged ranch that is lame and uninspiring, but Jet's tastes like they make it at their store, even if its not.

Why is WingStop ranch so different? ›

What Makes Wingstop Ranch Stand Out? Wingstop's Ranch is distinguished by its harmonious blend of buttermilk, mayonnaise, dill, and a medley of spices. The resultant concoction is a velvety, flavorful sauce that pairs exquisitely with a variety of dishes, transcending beyond just wings.

What's the difference between ranch and buttermilk ranch? ›

Traditional ranch is made from sour cream, mayonnaise, dried herbs (usually dill, parsley, and chives), garlic powder, and onion powder. Buttermilk versions have, as you guessed, the addition of buttermilk and tend to be a bit thinner.

Why you should eat ranch dressing? ›

One serving of ranch dressing provides a considerable amount of vitamin K. Canola oil is the primary ingredient in bottled ranch dressings which is a good source of vitamin K. Vitamin K is stored in the body's fat tissues because it is a fat-soluble vitamin.

What is the difference between restaurant ranch and bottled ranch? ›

The difference is dairy

The key difference between bottled ranch and ranch that's been mixed from a packet — which is what's usually served in restaurants — is that ranch made from a mix usually contains real dairy ingredients. The store-bought varieties don't.

What is the ranch at Wingstop uses? ›

WingStop makes its own special blend of ranch dressing using mayonnaise, buttermilk, and ranch seasoning.

What does Mcdonald's use for ranch? ›

Ingredients: Soybean Oil, Water, Cultured Low Fat Buttermilk, Distilled Vinegar, Sugar, Contains 2% Or Less: Sea Salt, Garlic Puree, Whey Protein Concentrate, Lactic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Modified Guar Gum, Black Pepper, Potassium Sorbate (preservative), Onion Powder, Natural Flavor, Autolyzed Yeast Extract, Salt, Parsley ...
