An all-natural linen spray for sheets is one of those home essentials you won’t need to buy even again, and it’s so easy to make yourself. And yes, you can use the linen spray for more than just sheets! These easy recipes are great for adding a fresh and comforting scent to everyday items like pillows, couches, chairs, and blankets, or use itsimply as an air freshener.
Why Make a Natural Linen Spray
A natural linen spray is the perfect way to spruce up the home while using simple, clean ingredients. Of course, it’s great for adding a refreshing scent, but it can also act as a mild disinfectant since there is some alcohol added. This means anything that cannot go into the washing machine, will want to try this on!
The simplest ways to make your own linen spray are touse dried herbs and/or using essential oils. Since there are so many choices, we are making a linen spray for sheets in two ways using simple ingredients. The first way will be using dried herbs, with essential oils being optional. The second way is using only essential oils to scent the linen spray. I love the variety in making recipes using essential oils and other ingredients when making a natural home environment. And both recipes were too good not to share!
Natural Ingredients
Dried Herbs
Dried herbs are a great way to add a light, refreshing scent to your diy linen spray. Make sure to use a good quality dried herb, or if possible make them yourself from your backyard garden! When making the linen spray, the dried herbs are brought back to life after adding hot water and steeping them.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are another way to add a gorgeous scent to your linen spray. They are a great choice when looking to add scent to a recipe while avoiding artificial scents. For these recipes, there are several essential oils used to create the different scents. See below for the calming, fresh, and all-natural recipes for the diy linen spray for sheets.
Water
The best option is to use distilled water since it has all impurities removed through a distillation process. If you’re going to use distilled water, then I would suggest you buy this from the store. The next best option is to use boiled tap water that has been cooled, which is what I use the majority of the time. Boiling the water removes microorganisms, but it still has mineral salts.
Alcohol
Clear, high-proof alcohol is ideal for this recipe. It is colorless, doesn’t have a strong scent, and works well to mix essential oils and water for a longer period of time. I would recommend using Vodka or Everclear when making room sprays.
Linen Spray for Sheets using Dried Herbs
Let’s jump right intohow to make a DIY lavender linen spray for sheetsthat smells calming, soothing, and amazing for sleep. I love using this simple recipe for sheets and pillows, especially before bedtime. This recipe is for a 16 oz.glass spray bottle, but you can also cut it down to make it for a 2 oz. or 4 oz. bottle.
making the lavender calming linen spray
- Since the herbs need to steep for several minutes, you will need to boil the 2 cups of water first. You can boil the water in a glass measuring cup in the microwave or boil the water on your stovetop. Add the 1 tbspdried lavenderand 2 tbspdried chamomileto the glass measuring cup with the boiled water. Let the herbs steep for 5-10 minutes.
- Use a strainer to remove the dried herbs from the water. I like pouring it into another glass measuring cup to make pouring easy. Let the mixture cool on the counter or place it in the fridge for faster cooling.
- Meanwhile, measure out 3 ounces of clear alcohol (vodka). Pour it into a glass bottle using a small funnel if needed.
- Pour lavender and chamomile-infused water (after cooling) into a glass spray bottle.
- Add 5 drops of lavender oil and 5 drops of lemon oil to the herb-infused water and vodka. Althoughessential oilsare optional, they really do enhance and pull together all the scents so nicely.
- Once all of the ingredients are added, you can screw on the spray nozzle and shake to mix. Each time you use the calming lavender linen spray, you will want to give it a gentle shake before using it to ensure the ingredients are mixed well.
Lastly, you can add a simple twine or ribbon for a decorative touch to the linen spray. You can also add a label sticker to the glass bottle for a customized look. I love both the natural, farmhouse look as well as the crisp, freshness of the label.
The label definitely elevates this homemade recipe to make it look more like you bought it from the store. Make sure to check out these free printable labels that I made for the homemade linen spray recipe!

This recipe is for a 2 oz.glass spray bottle, but you can double the recipe for a 4 oz.glass spray bottletoo.
making the fresh & all-natural linen sprays
- Before you get started, if you are going to use boiled water like I do, then you will want to boil it right away. You can boil the water in a glass measuring cup in the microwave or boil the water on your stovetop. I typically will boil 2-6 ounces of water at a time, just in case something happens or I want to make another recipe! In order for the boiled water cool faster, place it in the fridge or freezer while getting the other ingredients and supplies ready.
- Measure out 1/2 ounce of clear alcohol (vodka) and pour into the glass spray bottle using a small funnel if needed.
- Add 1 1/2 oz. of distilled water or boiled & cooled water to the glass spray bottle.
- Lastly, add theessential oilsto give the linen spray that refreshing scent. For the 2oz size bottle use between 12-15 drops of essential oil. See the different essential oil line spray recipe options below for my favorite scents!
- Once all of the ingredients are added, you can screw on the spray nozzle and shake to mix. Each time you use the linen spray, you will want to give it a good shake before using it to ensure the ingredients are mixed well.

Where can you use linen spray?
The beauty of a linen spray is that you can use it in so many places in your home. Most people tend to use them for bedding, sheets, pillows, blankets, couches, fabric chairs, clothing, car seats, and pet beds. It’s perfect for those items that can’t be washed or have a tag that says spot treat only.
Using a linen spray for sheets gives the most calming and soothing scent right as you get into bed for a good night’s sleep and sweet dreams. It can also bring a much-needed boost to certain items that are in between washing. The linen spray spruces them up a bit until you can get around to washing them again.
How to use a linen spray
The simplest way to use a diy linen spray is to lightly spray the item. The one thing you don’t want to do is completely drench it with the spray, as this could result in staining and an overpowering scent.
By misting the decorative pillow, dry clean only clothing, baby blanket or stuffed animal, bed sheets, or other soft furnishings you are adding a light refreshing scent. After it’s dried out, you can always go back and add more a second time if needed.
If you are concerned about any staining, then perform a spot test on the back side of the object. Then wait to see how it dries before spraying the entire item.
How long does a linen spray last?
Typically a linen spray should last between 1-3 days. Of course, this will depend on the exact blend you use when you made the linen spray recipe, as well as how much you used on the item. The natural scent can linger longer if you sprayed it over a larger surface area and how often it was used during that time.
If you find the scent running out, then go ahead and spray again. I love using the linen spray on sheets before bedtime to really help encourage a good night’s sleep for myself and my kiddos!
Can you make a DIY linen spray without alcohol?
Yes, you can make a diy linen spray without alcohol however it is hard to find a better option. Lots of diy linen spray recipes use unscented witch hazel in them, but it doesn’t truly bind the essential oils with the water.
While witch hazel does work in the short term, it doesn’t keep the combination of water and essential oils together for that long. If you are going to use witch hazel, then I would suggest you also add in a small amount of castile soap to act as your emulsifier as well.
